Hand laid paper and hand press printing. John Duchow, a native of Salem Massachusetts, first served an apprenticeship with the Salem Gazette, before setting sale for California and the gold fields. The young gold seeker booked passage on the clipper Staffordshire and left Boston on May 3, 1852.
Hammond recorded that Duchow arrived in San Francisco on August 13, 1852, and worded for various newspapers before purchasing the Tuolumne Courier in 1857.
