Ominous dark seas, sultry landscapes and red-light districts, Warhol-inspired pop culture icons (Elvis and Marylyn make their inevitable appearances), solitary figures on desolate streets, are all'pure Daido. The occasional nod in homage to Robert Frank, Lisette Model, William Klein, Walker Evans, and others, balance the overt Provoke-era style Daido helped forge. Without the inclusion of several images of road signs and store names (and of course, the book's title), most of these photographs could have been made in any coastal city.
