Signed by John Hersey on second free endpaper. Preface written by the author for this edition. Original publisher's letter laid in front cover. Hersey was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist considered one of the earliest practitioners of the so-called New Journalism.

The Call is a work of historical fiction drawn from the the journals and correspondence of his parents, missionaries to China. Allows readers to live history through characters caught up in actual events. This is the last title in Franklin Library's most collectible series, known as the "signed 60".
